The camps are sited in rural or wilderness areas for fire suppression. The institution is separated into two dormitory type facilities for minimum and low-medium custody inmates. SCC functions as the center for training staff and inmates in firefighting techniques for the southern portion of California. SCC administers 20 male camps located from Central California to the Mexican border. SCC is one of only two prisons in the State responsible for the training and placement of male inmates in the Conservation Camp Program. The primary mission of the Sierra Conservation Center (SCC) is to provide housing, programs and services for minimum and medium custody inmates, to aid in their rehabilitation. It is important to note that the Sierra Conservation Center does not let all the inmates participate in the conservation camp program, inmates at the Center may receive training, but many of the inmates will never be selected for the camps, they will stay at the main prison facility to serve their time. The purpose of this is to both rehabilitate the inmates and to train them in fire suppression so that when a wildfire starts the inmates can be quickly sent to the area to fight the blaze. ![]() There are 20 of these conservation camps, which are located in the wilderness and have no walls, fences, etc. Sierra Conservation Center is a minimum to a medium-security facility that is one of two facilities that gets to select and trains inmates into the conservation camp program. The mission is to promote and prepare the offender to leave in better shape than when they arrived, giving them the best chance to never come back and thus lower the state's recidivism rate. There are ample educational and vocational training programs for all inmates, especially ones that show a willingness to learn new things that will prepare them for a better life when they are released.
